Road Construction, Thai Style

I finally have grasped how water and sewer main repairs work in Thailand. There are several steps:

1. Tear up the necessary portions of road. Dig a very deep ditch. Make the necessary repairs. For God's sake, DON'T FILL THE DITCH IN. Go away for a month.

2. Wait for unsuspecting driver to crash into the open ditch. Then put stanchions around open ditch with a piece of yellow rope strung between them, which indicates "big hole here." Go away for a month.

3. Wait for unsuspecting driver to not see yellow rope, and to crash into the open ditch. Fill in the ditch. For God's sake, DON'T PAVE OVER THE DITCH... LEAVE BARE DIRT. Go away for a month.

4. Wait for dirt in ditch to settle 1 or 2 feet below surface of pavement. Wait for unspsecting driver to crash into 2-foot-deep pothole. Put more dirt in potholes. Put up more stanchions and yellow rope. Go away for a month.

5. Repeat step 4 several times until dirt stops going down.

6. Finally, pave over the work, and declare the job complete.

7. Wait 18 months for the new pipes that were put in to fill with silt and sand and then repeat the process again.
