I Had Almost Forgotten About The Coup

Truthfully, the American elections here in Thailand were more talked about among foreigners than the coup just a couple of hours away. The whole thing came and went relatively quietly, which is probably how the Thai people (both for and against the coup) preferred it.

The only time I even talked about it with a Thai person was when I went to visit Pui's parents upcountry (where ousted Prime Minister Thaksin had most of his support) and saw that they had a picture of Thaksin hanging up. I told them that now that Thaksin was gone, the government would be friendlier to foreigners, including the foreigner who is giving their daughter money for her family every month. They appreciated the fact, but as far as I know haven't taken the picture down yet.

Anyway, it is no secret that Thaksin was the king of shady deals. When he wasn't pulling strings in the public sector, he was greasing palms in the private sector. Finally, it looks like the new government is going to be coming out with a report to document all of the things that Thaksin did while in office, and why it necessitated a coup.
