Daily Report: VIP Teeny Boppers

Was up early, and put in 1,000 lines before lunch, and 1,000 lines after lunch.

Bob had asked some of his friends to stop by his restaurant for lunch today because he is trying to open another branch of his restaurant in one of the local shopping centers. He said that the lady in charge of renting out spaces was coming buy with one of the big bosses of the shopping center to check out Bob's restaurant and hammer out some final details. Bob wanted his restaurant to look busy when his "VIP guests" stopped by at 2:00 in the afternoon.

So Mike and I showed up for lunch, and a little late... 2:45-ish, the lady showed up, with 3 teenage girls with her. I don't know what that was all about, but none of the girls struck me as the upper management of a multi-billion-baht corporation. Oh well. Good lunch anyway.

Spent the evening in front of the television. I'm out of vermouth, so my martini was extra dry tonight.

Bob's BBQ seems like it is closed ?

No body eats there since the real BBQ place in Jomtien opened , The Great American Rib Company - I'm sure a big eater like you must have eaten there.

Blows the doors off of the little sad poorly located shophouse that was trying to pass off as a real BBQ restaurant with their ridiculous prices and small portions.

Actually, Bob's is doing quite well.

He just opened a second branch inside of Lennie's Bar on Soi Diamond, and in the next month or so will be opening a third branch inside of one of Pattaya's shopping malls. (I don't know if Bob wants that location divulged yet, so I won't say where it is... but it is an excellent location that promises to yield an incredible amount of business.)

Additionally, Bob's BBQ is one of Door-to-Door's top restaurants... in the top 3, I think, and the business he gets from that is approximately equal to what he gets in his restuarant.

And as an additional "additionally", Bob caters at least 2 or 3 big parties a week, which also represents a huge portion of his business.

Finally, Bob will soon be starting the hunt for a fourth location to open up in. There are several new malls and plazas being built in Pattaya right now, and Bob will be expanding again without doubt.

Bob is my best friend, and I know his business model almost as well as he does. I can assure you that Bob's BBQ is doing very well, and is only going to grow faster and faster over the next year or so.

p.s. I don't know how you can call a 1.5 pound hamburger for $7 a "small portion", or a 14-inch rack of ribs for 185 baht a "ridiculous price", but if you can find better deals elsewhere, best of luck to you.

Hi Tool ,

No One Eats at Bob's anymore since the new place on Tepprasit Road has opened.

Bob's has good overpriced food in a bad location.

$7. for a burger ?
Would be $5. in USA correct.

And the spot in Carrefore that was a Roti place is still sitting empty.

Jil Wrinkle said...

No... not Canadian dollars... American dollars.

So get this straight: People sell quarter-pound hamburgers for 80 or 90 baht in Pattaya. Bob sells a hamburger 6 times that size for 300 baht. Get it?

I really don't understand why you dedicate so much of your comments here to bitching about Bob's when you go in there all the time to eat. You only started complaining here at my blog once you realized that complaining to Bob wasn't going to get you free food. Stop trying to rip people off and get a job instead, and maybe you'll be able to afford 500 baht for a meal like everybody else, instead of just complaining about how expensive it is.

Either that or bring a Thai girl to Bob's and then walk off in the middle of the meal and just leave her to pay the bill like you are so famous for doing.

Bob's was good until the other place opened up.

I think Bob is a nice guy , but his prices suck and his staff are retarded, plus there are some Thai morons who stare at you when you eat, who the hell wants that.

Now I ate last week at the Rib Company Place and the people in the next table got their order fcuked up and the manager gave them all sorts of free comps to compensate for the screw up.

You would never see that in a place like Bob's.

And selling food out of some beer bar does not count for much, why did they kick him out of the TQ2 ? , you would know - something to do with Sb1's BG perhaps ?

Pretty pathetic for you to have to show up in his place to make it seem like he has customers.

I pass the place when I need to get gas or go to pay my telephone bill and it is always empty , not a good sign.

But I like Bob he is a nice guy.

Fine, I'll sit down and do some numbers for you:

About 80% of Bob's on-site restaurant business occurs between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. when he gets good business. He does very little lunch-time business, but wanted to make sure a few people were eating at the restaurant when the people he was signing contracts with showed up.

About 50% of Bob's total sales are home delivery... so for every baht Bob makes in his restaurant, he is getting another baht through phone orders.

Additionally, Bob has a huge catering business. FLB bar uses Bob's BBQ on a regular basis for their parties, as do several other places. Additionally, Bob caters at least one or two other parties per week in Pattaya. (And if you think his meals are expensive, you can imagine how expensive 20 or 30 pounds of ribs with all the trimmings costs... multiply that by 2 or 3 parties a week.)

When Bob opens at [the mall] next month (which is what he signed the contracts for yesterday), he will double his business again... easily. He's going to be serving 80-baht meals there, so if you want a cheap meal from Bob, go there.

As for opening up in a bar not being a big deal, I would agree that it's just an on-the-side gig, but there are a ton of farang-run restaurants in Pattaya that would be happy to do as much sales per day in their restaurant as Bob is currently doing per day in Lennie's.

Now, (a) I'm not going to tell you how much Bob does do in sales every month, but it's more than many similar restaurants in Pattaya, and it's more than enough to make me jealous. (b) I'm not going to tell you why Bob moved his business out of TQ2 because that's a private matter.

p.s. You all really need to start putting names on your posts, so I can figure out which of you is the Canadian dickhead, and which of you isn't.

Hi Jil , I am not a Canadian .

But Bob's sucks compared to the Rib Company that opened recently ( have you eatne there?) , in fact I can no longer bring myself to eat at Bob's BBQ anymore.

I understand he is your buddy and his food is OK but many people have switched over to the newer and bigger and better rib place regardless of how much you claim Bob's is some great success, I often see the place empty in the evenings.

Look forward to 80 baht meals at the Carrefor , just hope the portions are not so small that I will have to laugh my ass off at them.

Actually, I haven't eaten at the GARC yet... although it is on my list of places to go for one of my Friday night dinners. I should make it there within the next 2 months.

Bob eats at GARC quite often actually as well, as he is friends with Greg there, and I believe he and the GARC might be talking about doing certain things together in the future.

I think that the principle problem (and I've talked many times with Bob about this) is that it is really hard to sell farangs on the concept of high-end hamburgers. If you go to the GARC, the prices for ribs are essentially the same as what Bob charges, so nobody can complain about those prices. Instead, what most people seem to react negatively to are the costs of Bob's hamburgers. Now granted, if you see a 250 baht hamburger, that seems pretty steep, until you realize that it is a 3/4-pound hamburger of the highest quality ground beef that Bob can locate... and he has it shipped express from Bangkok. (I checked the menu, and the 1-1/2 pound hamburger is 425 baht.) That's not expensive when you think about the amount of hamburger that you are getting.

Anyway, as I am sure that both Bob and Greg will tell you: There are more than enough people in Pattaya to keep TWO BBQ rib restaurants alive. Whichever people prefer is where they will go. However, if Bob were really worried about losing his entire business to GARC, I would know about it.

Jil Wrinkle said...

Oh... and if you don't like the service staff at Bob's, you know how it is in Thailand: Wait a month and try again when there is a whole new group of waitresses there who will make a whole new group of mistakes.

(I'm so used to crappy service in Thailand now that I don't even notice it any more. Sorry... but anybody in Thailand who complains about crappy service from idiotic waiters can only be a tourist, with the accompanying high hopes that that entails. Us locals gave up hope of getting our drinks and meals delivered without drama after the first 4 or 5 months.)

The story is a few years back Bob went to the GARC in Bkk. and then ran down to Pattaya to open his place up.

Now the GARC has some serious financial backing and a restaurant that dwarfs Bob's.

In order for Ole' Bob to even try to compete with them his prices have to come down, bottom line - I know many many people who just will not eat at Bob's anymore.

And they will not be doing any business together , Bob goes there for ideas and to copy their menu as he so obviously did recently.

Try the place Jil , the food is good and their prices are not "cheap" either but the place seems to justify the high prices.

Hope Bob reads this site to learn how he can win back so many of his lost customers.

Jil Wrinkle said...

Well, we'll see regarding all of this. Let's have this conversation again in 2 years or so, and compare notes.

I'll get to GARC one of these days... that's a promise.

You won't be in Thailand two years from now.

Trust Me.

HB: You do know that every time you visit my blog, you leave your IP address right? If I were bored, I could call CAT Telecom and get the address of the internet café you are sitting in... and you have been sitting in the same place all day long... since, oh... about 10:30 this morning. In fact, you've checked my website 5 times today... and once last night. Obsess much? Do you dream about me too?

p.s. By the way, you do something the same way every time you visit my blog... and I can always tell when it is you.

I believe Bob's provides a Quality product for a fair price. If it is out of your reach then you can always choose a product in your budget such as Mcdonalds. Just remember you won't get the same quality. As for Jil, being around in 2 years I don't think he will have any problem doing what he desires. Unfortunately I am afraid the negative posters will still be around also. From Jakal

Jil,
Is HB the guy known as Harry Black?
If so, check out this site.
www.harrisblackwatch.com
I don't know how to make it into a hyperlink (I am dumb) so, can you post it like that for me?

Some guy sent me this site and it was a real eye opener.
In fact I would love to meet this guy sometime...

Jil Wrinkle said...

Anon... This blog is quite familiar with Harry Black. He vowed about a month ago to never speak to me again, and so far he has let me down... but there is always tomorrow.

He takes photos from people's sites and uses them as his own and loves to rip off bar girls and brags about how he has sex with them, without a condom.

A real piece of work...

Anyway, this kind of attention is probably what the pathetic creep wants. What a sorry life he must have. I have seen a photo of him, typical shaved headed loser looking fellow.
Ha ha, what a dick.

Jil (with one L)
Thanks a lot for the update on Bob's resturant; I wish him the best of luck, he is a nice guy and hope he does well in that city of sharks.
