October 23rd is Chulalongkorn Day in Thailand. Chulalongkorn was Rama (King) V, reigning from 1868 to 1910, and is Thailand's favorite and most important king (not including Bhumibol, the current king, Rama IX). Chulalongkorn is credited with modernizing Thailand... reforming the government, developing infrastructure and education, and keeping Thailand an independent nation when all of its neighbors were falling prey to colonial powers.
A great man, for sure... but damn: His holiday creates traffic in Pattaya that defies belief.
