The Great Pattaya News Roundup

To start things off, apparently the Pattaya police do read Jil In Pattaya, because only a day after my snooty little post about the comment by police that "foreign prostitutes harm Thailand's reputation", the police actually went out and arrested some Thai prostitutes on Beach Road. Good idea guys: These are the girls that the Stupid Tourists are always getting robbed by. I'm all for the Naughty Nightlife, but it has to be controlled, monitored, and we do have to save the idiots amongst us from themselves.

Next up, we have word that the police are going to start taking copyright violators more seriously. Truth be told, I like my 100-baht DVDs as much as the next fellow, and nobody (I repeat: Nobody) mistakenly buys pirated goods, thinking that they are getting the real thing. That being said, I do have to admit that the amount of copyright infringement in Pattaya (and its' blatancy) are getting a bit out of hand: Shirts and suits; dresses and shoes; purses, watches and glasses; perfumes and cosmetics; software, music, and movies. Even reputable stores like Big-C have vendors just outside on their sidewalks selling pirated goods. I have to grudgingly admit that it's time that Pattaya clean up (or at least scale back) this trade.

Finally, we have word that all hotel operators and landlords are requested to inform immigration whenever a foreigner takes up residence in one of their rooms or properties. I'm not too keen on the "foreigner registry", but it is the law. Also remember this: Getting caught putting a false address on an immigration form is a big no-no.
