Daily Report: Bar Hopping

I had a lot of fun blogging this morning, and having a wander around the internet... but didn't really get much work done. The afternoon was a bit of an improvement, but still weak. Overall though, as much of a failure as I consider this work week to have been, the amount I got done is about what my average used to be in the first half of this year.

Stan and Maid Lee invited Epril and me out to Preecha Seafood Restaurant down in Ban Ampur close to the yacht club. American Joe and Eric were there as well. We stuffed ourselves stupid on lobster, clams, and shrimp... all for the low, low price of 850 baht per couple.

You would think that Epril, coming from a fishing village, and having a fisherman for a father, would have had all kinds of seafood in her life already... but she had never had shellfish before. When I offered her a steamed clam dipped in a bit of melted butter, she looked quite interested at the prospect of some new food. However, her gagging / running off / retching / sicking-up reaction was quite unexpected. She was so viciously grossed out by the clam, I thought she might be having an allergic reaction, but nope... Epril just really, really dislikes clams, we've discovered.

Alf was showing off the
TQ2 girls' Christmas
outfits tonight. Nice.
After Preecha, we drove to Bob's BBQ and had one of the world's best strawberry margaritas. From there, it was off to TQ2 for Russ's birthday party. When I walked in, Mark and Russ were the only ones there. It turns out Stan had the date wrong: Russ's party is Sunday night. So Epril and I sat and chatted with Mark, who is one of the smartest and most knowledgeable people I know. He's about my age, from England. His knowledge of history, especially British history, is really astounding.

After TQ2, it was over to Champion to visit with Maid Lee and Stan and Owner Jew for a few drinks.

Matt and his wife Dang.
We had planned to meet up with Eric, Jeff and Lee, to go to the Hopf Brewery, but none of them got in touch with me, so at about 11:00, Epril and I went by ourselves to the Hopf to hear Enzo, the resident Italian tenor, sing. At Hopf, we met up with my friend Matt and his wife Dang. Matt is another one of the exceptionally smart people I know, about my age, and from Sweden. His skill at languages is unmatched, with accent-less fluency in both English and Thai, as well as the ability to have a conversation in 5 or 6 other languages, including Tagalog (i.e. Filipino). Dang, his Thai wife is no language slouch either, and speaks Thai, English, and Swedish with equal aplomb.

After Hopf, at 12:30 a.m., we went with Matt and Dang to Moon River Pub, and closed the place after getting in some dancing. Epril learned that the Filipino band there is from Davao, which is a city on the island of Mindanao, where she comes from. She was quite happy to be able to speak with them.

We were finally home at almost 2:00 a.m.

Hi Jil,
The seafood restaurant sounds delicious and cheap. Can you provide some clearer directions?
Thanks,
Richard

How do you figure that Epril isn't fitting in too well? Because she can't stomach clams? That doesn't make much sense to me.

Richard:

I wrote a review about Preecha seafood here, with directions. Turn right at the first traffic light after the Ambassador Hotel, and then go down that road (bearing left at the fork), and then keep an eye out for the place on your right. (See the photo taken from the parking lot so you know what you are looking for.)

I'll take a shot at the directions. Heading towards Sattahip on Sukhumvit, you'll pass the Ambassador Hotel on your right about 5 or 10 kilos south of Pattaya. Another couple kilos on, there's a traffic light. Turn right there into the town of Baan Amphur. Follow the main road for about a kilo and you will see Preecha on your right. There are signs, so it should be easy. The road twists to the left a bit just of Sukhumvit near a temple, so don't go straight into the temple.

I've made a google map for you--my first time so I don't know how good it is:

Richard: I'm deleting your original post and putting it here: The large URL you put up is harming the page layout of the blog post. Hope you don't mind.

Forgot the map. :) And while I was spending hours creating it, Jil replied. Ah, well.

Link to map to Preecha Seafood.

(Richard: By they way: Great job on the map, but unfortunately you were off by going about 50 meters too far: The restaurant is actually the the large blue-roofed structure just south of the red roof, about equidistant between the jettys.)

Hmph. He would have seen the signs. ;)

I love copy and paste. If this post is screwed up, feel free to delete it. I'm just having fun with google maps right now.

Hey JD, that's some brilliant stuff.

If you want, keep posting... especially other tourist spots in the Pattaya area... particularly ones that have been mentioned on this blog. I'll try to incorporate them into previous blog posts to help readers find the places.
