Thailand Wins Miss International Queen 2007

After a two-year break, Thailand — in the form of 21-year-old Panyrat Kirapatpakon (nick-named "Nong Fim") — has brought the Miss International Queen crown, awarded annually to the world's most beautiful transsexual, back to its host country.

Every year about this time, transsexuals from all over the world gather here in Pattaya at the Tiffany's Show Theatre for the International Queen pagaent. The show is broadcast live on Thai television, and the pagaent itself is well-attended by Thai celebrities and dignitaries. It is a very big to-do here in Thailand, as are the preliminary pagaents, the Miss Tiffany Pagaent, and the Miss Alcazar Pagaent.

This year, Miss International Queen crowned Miss Thailand as its winner, replacing Miss Mexico from last year. The First Runner-Up was Aleika Barros, Miss Brazil, and Second Runner-Up was Chanel Madrigal, Miss Phillippines. Miss Japan won for best costume, the Miss Photogenic award went to Miss Columbia, and the Miss Cordiality Award went to Miss Germany. Miss Philippines also won the evening gown competition.

This is the second year in a row I've missed the show, which is a bummer: It's a pretty good time, and you and your date get to chat with interesting and famous people at the big cocktail party beforehand. However, make sure you get your tickets well in advance as they sell out quickly, and be prepared to pay 2,500 baht ($75) and upwards per seat. Stop by the Tiffany's box office at the big theatre on Second Road to get information on next year's show.
