Tesco-Lotus Mini Store Protested Again

On Thursday night, shop owners from Soi Nerm Pleubwan and their friends, totalling more than 400 people, held a protest at the intersection of Sukhimvit Road and Soi Siam Country Club (next to Soi Nerm Pleubwan). They were protesting the impending opening of a Tesco-Lotus mini-store on the road.

I suppose one would feel sorry for these people who might lose their mom-and-pop businesses on Soi Nerm Pleubwan to some big corporation, until you realize that there are about 16 convenience stores (7-11 and Family Mart) on the 4-km-long Soi Nerm Pleubwan already, and these people didn't complain when those stores moved in.

Oh... and you want the really cheeky part? Some of the people protesting the opening of the Tesco Lotus mini store are the owners of those 7-11 and Family Mart stores... the "convenience store owners" mentioned in the news story I've linked to above.
