On average, about 50 civilian UK nationals are murdered around the world each year (excluding terrorist attacks). This means that almost 10 per cent of all murders of Britons abroad are committed in Thailand – a chilling figure, given that Thailand comprises only 0.6 per cent of all foreign travel from UK shores.
...
The number of deaths of British nationals' in Pattaya is hard to ascertain – though some sources claim that it is up to four every week, neither the FCO nor the Thai authorities have any data they are prepared to release. However, what can be speculated with some confidence is that of the 226 average annual deaths of British citizens in Thailand recorded by the FCO, a large percentage are in Pattaya.
...
"The trouble with [giving advice about the murder rate]... is that it would effectively highlight the number of murders over the past year or more here, which in the current circumstances could have a disproportionate impact on Thailand's reputation and legitimate commercial interests."

This is of their own making. if you know how to behave in thailand you dont get murdered
The phillipines is is worse
Murder rate per 100,000 people in Thailand: 8.0 (ranked 17th worldwide). Murder rate per 100,000 people in Philippines: 4.6 (ranked 27th worldwide).
Incarceration rate per 100,000 people in Thailand: 257 (ranked 12th in the world). Incarceration rate per 100,000 people in Philippines: 108 (ranked 45th in the world).
Thailand is third in the world in murders with firearms... and The Philippines is most asuredly not one of the two countries in front of it.
Thailand is simply a place filled with people who have a very high propensity to violence against foreigners. Don't blame dead tourists for that JK...
... or perhaps you would like to explain to us how the raped and murdered British tourist in Ko Samui was misbehaving in Thailand?
p.s. Sorry to be testy, but my pet peeve is when people start blaming the dead tourists when Thai people murder them, using "ignorance of Thailand" as an excuse for getting oneself killed.
That kind of reasoning works if you walk into the tiger cage at the zoo... not into a country filled with supposedly "civilized" people.
fair enough but that article is a peice of propaganda dug up by the guys family
i would wager 100 times as many brits contract hiv in Thailand than are murdered
i would wager 100 times as many brits contract hiv in Thailand than are murdered...
Even worse! However Thailand is NOT a civilized and far away of what we can see in brochures, cable TV.Just to know the real face of their"land of smiles"...Try to investigate about"jumpers"(suicides in Thailand, compare reports...)so you will get a whole picture...
